RQ Is Fit for $39.5M Construction Job, Navy Decides

RQ Construction LLC of Carlsbad has received a $39.5 million task order to build a fitness center at Naval Base Coronado.

A U.S. Defense Department statement said the work, part of a previously announced multiple-award contract, includes construction of a fitness facility and outdoor pool area. The fitness center will include a lobby, reception areas, and a gymnasium with basketball and volleyball courts with spectator seating.

There will also be exercise spaces, a computer area, mini theater and multipurpose room. The pool will be used for operational and survival training, as well as recreational swimming, and an existing track will be replaced with a new track, the statement said.

Ten option items are also being awarded, including demolition of four buildings; providing and installing audio visual and physical security equipment; and providing synthetic tracks for two softball fields and one multipurpose athletic field.

The task order contains one planned modification which, if exercised, would increase its cumulative value to just over $42.8 million. Work is expected to be completed by March 2015, and eight proposals were received for the project by the contracting entity, Naval Facilities Engineering Command Southwest in San Diego.
