Sacramento — Three San Diego County state lawmakers are pressing Caltrans to install freeway signs directing motorists to Miramar National Cemetery.
“It’s discouraging to know that military members who fought for our freedom must return home and battle a bureaucracy in order to pay tribute to our veterans,” said Assemblyman Martin Garrick, R-Solana Beach.
Garrick plans to join Republican Senators Mark Wyland of Solana Beach and Joel Anderson of La Mesa at a news conference Friday morning at the gates of the cemetery.
The request is for Caltrans to put signs up on Interstate 805 and Interstate 15. The Miramar National Cemetery has been open a year without having accurate directional signs on those major access routes, critics of Caltrans say.
Talks with Caltrans were ongoing Thursday, according to Garrick’s office.
Veterans are also expected to be on hand. The United Veterans Council of San Diego County has issued an alert urging them to come to the event, which begins at 9:30 a.m.
