Congressman Bob Filner announced $280,000 was awarded to Veterans Village of San Diego to provide homeless veterans with job training aimed at helping them succeed in civilian careers.
“Our veterans put their lives on the line for our country and we cannot let them down when they return home,” Filner said. “There is no excuse for homelessness amongst our veterans, and Veterans Village of San Diego proves that with enough resources we can successfully get veterans off the street and into jobs where they can put their experience to work.”
The grant comes from the Department of Labor’s Veterans’ Employment and Training Service through the Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program, the only federal program that focuses exclusively on employment of veterans who are homeless.
It was awarded on a competitive basis to state and local work force investment boards, local public agencies and nonprofit organizations, including faith-based and community organizations. These agencies are familiar with the areas and populations to be served and have demonstrated that they can administer effective programs.
The grants are the first of a possible four years of annual awards contingent upon satisfactory performance and congressional appropriations.
